Part of the Central Region Schools Trust, Teach Central (formerly the RSAA Teaching School Alliance) delivers high-quality teacher training across Good and Outstanding schools in the West Midlands and wider central region. We work with all phases of education—first, primary, middle, high, and secondary—offering placements in Birmingham, Dudley, Redditch, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, and Warwickshire.

Teach Central, in partnership with Birmingham City University, offers a distinctive school-led teacher training route. Unlike the traditional PGCE core route, our trainees begin their placement in September, fully immersed in school life from day one. This early start allows trainees to take part in whole-school CPD, safeguarding, and SEND strategies while being treated as valued members of staff. Our approach combines school-based placements, centre-led training, and academic study at master's level, leading to a PGCE with QTS. 

Trainees complete two placements across our multi-academy trust and partner schools, starting in September. The course includes a bespoke CPD programme, one-to-one support, and subject knowledge enhancement to ensure confident, well-rounded classroom practitioners.

    Our full-time, one-year programme (September–July) begins with a school placement beginning on the first academic day of September. Trainees benefit from two high-quality placements within our Trust and partner schools, combined with bespoke training sessions led by experienced practitioners.

What to expect in your training year

Our training is rooted in research-informed practice, combining theory with real-world experience. Trainees visit their placement school in advance, helping them prepare for September. With placements across our wide family of schools and a strong focus on inclusion, our programme equips future teachers to overcome barriers to learning and make a lasting impact in their communities.

Lead Partner Programme 

The Lead Partner Programme is a school-led training route, designed by schools in partnership with a university or SCITT. Trainees begin their placement in September and are based in Good or Outstanding schools from day one—offering practical, hands-on experience. This route is ideal for those hoping to secure a role within the network of schools they train in. 

Training Options: 

  • Option 1: Salaried Route (Secondary & High only) 
    For those with classroom experience or career changers. Trainees are employed as unqualified teachers and receive a salary from their placement school. 

  • Option 2: Tuition-Fee Route (All phases) 
    Open to all eligible graduates. Trainees pay a £9,535 fee and may access bursaries, tuition loans, and scholarships.

Eligibility

Who we are looking for... 

We are looking for people who have the right personal qualities and potential to be a passionate and committed teacher to improve the outcomes for the young people we work with.  

While experience of working with young people is not essential, it is often found that the strongest applicants are those who have shown an interest in working with young people and a willingness to get some experience of school where possible. You are likely to be asked at interview about your experiences of being in a school, even if it just from an observational point of view. We are looking for those who have:

How We Select Trainee Teachers 

Teach Central and Birmingham City University review all applications and aim to match candidates to their preferred school location. 

Shortlisted applicants will: 

  • Complete a series of suitability tasks 
  • Attend a panel interview 
  • Lead a short teaching activity (up to 30 minutes) 
  • Complete a 30-minute written task (materials provided in advance) 

Additional checks include: 

  • References 
  • DBS clearance 
  • Fitness to teach assessment 
  • Qualification verification 
  • Safeguarding declaration 

Entry Requirements

To apply, you must hold a degree from a UK Higher Education Institution or an equivalent international qualification. While a 2:1 classification is preferred, we welcome applications from those with a 2:2 or lower, especially if other elements of the application are strong. All applications are considered on an individual basis. 

For secondary applicants, subject knowledge is reviewed case by case. Those applying for the salaried route must demonstrate a strong grasp of their chosen subject or specialism with classroom-based experience, sustained over time demonstrating progress and attainment of learners.  

In terms of academic qualifications, all applicants must have achieved Grade C/4 or above in English and mathematics at GCSE level (or equivalent). Primary applicants must also hold Grade C/4+ in science. 

We recognise a wide range of qualifications, including international, vocational, or professional credentials, and are committed to assessing each applicant’s suitability for training on merit. 

  • A UK degree (2:1 preferred, but 2:2 considered) or an equivalent international qualification 
  • GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (plus Science for Primary) 
  • Secondary applicants must demonstrate subject knowledge; salaried route requires strong subject expertise 
  • Overseas, vocational, or professional qualifications may be accepted

Funding, fees & SKEs

Fees & Funding 

As a trainee teacher (Postgraduate), you could be funded through a student loan in the same way as for your first degree. A course fee of £9535 is payable to the higher education institution. You may be eligible for the standard student support package, including training bursaries, tuition fee loans and scholarships if appropriate. Once you have accepted a place on the training programme, you can make applications for tuition fee loans through Student Finance England to cover the cost of training.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE)

Train with Teach Central  

Teach Central is a trusted Lead Partner of Birmingham City University. Trainees start in their placement school from September, fully immersed in school life—including CPD, safeguarding, and SEND strategies—and treated as staff from day one. 

We provide layered, ongoing support through:

Whilst we do not require school experience, we strongly encourage you to seek an opportunity in school so you can make sure that teaching is right for you. If you intend to apply for our course, we can offer you school experience in one of our settings. By completing school experience with us, you will discover Central Region Schools Trust and may have the opportunity to: 

  • watch a range of lessons and age groups being taught 
  • observe highly effective teachers of varying levels of experience 
  • talk to teachers about what it means to be a teacher 
  • see students in and outside of lessons 
  • observe high quality whole school or department CPD 
  • talk to our current trainees about the Teach Central course 

All of this will give you valuable insight and support you with your application and interview. 

How to take part: 

Once you’ve registered with Get Into Teaching, you’ll be able to book school experience online through their School Experience Programme. 

Alternatively, upon a successful interview, you will be invited into your placement school for a familiarisation visit, in the summer term.

What is the difference between Teach Central and Central Region Schools Trust? 
Teach Central is the training provision of the Central Region Schools Trust, which was formerly RSA Academies, and was founded, as a Trust, by the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturing & Commerce. Since then, Central Region has become their own Trust and Teach Central is the Initial Teacher Training division of the Trust. 
 

How does this route differ from doing a PGCE at university?

What support will I receive as a Teach Central trainee? 
You’ll be invited to an induction day in July, and we’ll stay in regular contact beforehand to answer any questions you may have. 

You will receive multi-tiered levels of support and will be assigned a trained ITT mentor within your school who will guide your professional development. Our mentors focus on supporting the whole person, helping you thrive during your training and prepare for a successful teaching career. You will also have access to a professional mentor, subject tutor and the wider Teach Central Team. 

Each week, you’ll receive protected mentoring time. You’ll also have informal check-ins between sessions, so you’re never left waiting for support. 

In addition, the school’s Professional Mentor & Teach Central will oversee your progress, ensuring you’re well-supported throughout your placement. Our schools offer a collaborative, friendly environment where support extends beyond your phase/department/setting. 

We also provide training to build resilience and promote healthy habits, helping you manage challenges effectively. Trainee feedback is regularly gathered and used to continually improve our programme. 

All Teach Central trainees and staff have free access to the ‘Care First’ employee assistance programme. 
 

What are the benefits of doing a school-based training route? 
You will spend the entire year across two school placements, allowing you to become a valued part of the school community. Starting from day one, in September, at the start of the academic year, you'll work with the students you’ll be teaching, helping you to build meaningful relationships and gain a clear understanding of the realities of daily school life. 

Training in school doesn’t mean missing out on academic depth—you’ll still attend weekly sessions led by subject experts and engage with current research on how students learn. The key difference is that you'll return to the classroom the very next day, giving you immediate opportunities to apply what you’ve learned. 
 

What does a typical week look like? 

  • You will be based at your placement school throughout the year, Tuesday to Friday 
  • Monday is your allocated pedagogy/subject knowledge training day, which is hosted at one of our schools, or on site at BCU 
  • Each week, your teaching will incrementally increase as the year progresses. This will begin with observing experienced teachers, building up to independent teaching with some team-teaching for KS5, second subject exposure and as a form tutor.  
  • You will be supported each step of the way by your trained mentor who is a highly effective teacher 
  • You will receive a weekly mentor meeting 
  • You will receive a weekly update from Teach Central which details everything for the week ahead.
     

Will there be any additional opportunities to develop my knowledge of SEND an enrichment? 

Yes, there is one dedicated period to SEND on your timetable each week and this is an opportunity to meet with the SENDCO, chat with an Achievement Assistant, complete a pupil pursuit, or to review educational plans and how these support with lesson planning and creating well-conceived and adapted resources. There is also a university-based day focused on SEND theory and evidence based practice.  

We actively encourage our trainees to be involved in school enrichment such as educational visits, experiencing specialist visitors to school, and in planning extracurricular activities.  

How will I be assessed? 
There are nine termly reviews across the year to reflect on progress and that you will successfully meet your targets.  

You will do three academic assignments across the year. These will align carefully with your studies and practice and be spaced with one per term. They will involve doing academic reading and then applying that to your classroom practice. Just like in your degree, these assignments will be written in an academic style and be fully referenced. Support with writing these assignments is available from Birmingham City University. The three topic areas are:
