School Improvement Team

A key strategic aim of the trust is to ensure that all schools deliver a sustainably good education for our 7000+ students.  

The Executive Leadership Team (ELT) led by Guy Shears EP/CEO, drives school improvement across the Trust and is responsible for strategy development, implementation and monitoring of impact, in close liaison and consultation with the senior team leaders (STL – Principals and function leads).

Guy Shears - Executive Principal (CEO)

Guy’s 33 year-long career in education includes 25 years (to date) spent in senior leadership roles such as headteacher, executive headteacher, and now as the founding Chief Executive of a multi-academy trust established by the Royal Society of Arts in 2012. His experience spans across a wide range of educational settings, from early years to sixth form.

Guy has a proven track record of driving school improvement, successfully leading transformative changes in 13 schools that currently serve 7,351 students. His leadership approach focuses on raising standards in challenging areas, with a strong commitment to creating a distinctive school culture that promotes social justice. A National Leader of Education and a lead Ofsted inspector, Guy also serves on the Department for Education’s West Midlands Advisory Board and leads a CEO learning group on "Culture at Scale" for the region.

Ian Mellor - Director of Education

Ian is the Director of Education for Central Region Schools Trust, overseeing all 13 schools from early years to post-16. In addition to school oversight, he line-manages Safeguarding, SEND provision, and Attendance across the Trust.

Ian holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Liverpool and a postgraduate degree from Durham University. He began his career teaching Physical Education and Maths and joined the Trust in 2007 as Director of Learning and Standards at Arrow Vale School. He was part of the leadership team that achieved an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating in 2014. As Vice Principal, he led on Raising Standards, Sixth Form, Data, Timetabling, and Curriculum.

From 2017 to 2025, Ian served as Principal, maintaining the school’s ‘Outstanding’ status in both 2018 and 2024. In 2022, he became Executive Principal, overseeing the development of two schools. Under his leadership, Waseley Hills School improved from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ in its 2025 inspection.

Ian has worked closely with the Department for Education, local authorities, and external partners on major school rebuild projects, with completions planned for 2025 and 2026. His leadership is defined by a commitment to excellence, strategic improvement, and ensuring high-quality education across all phases of the Trust.

Samantha McMonagle - Executive School Improvement Lead

Samantha has been a valued member of Central Region Schools Trust since March 2018. She has played a key role in cross-phase school improvement, leading the development of the Trust’s co-design model for collaboration and CPD, and overseeing the transition from a teaching school to the People Development Institute. Samantha supports schools through their improvement journeys, including induction into the Trust.

She leads on Disadvantaged and Teaching and Learning and oversees the Trust’s school improvement team and school-to-school support, working closely with the Director of Education and Executive Principal for Primary. Prior to this, Samantha spent nine years as a School Improvement Advisor for a local authority, including time as a National Challenge Advisor and National Strategies Consultant for Improvement.

Her career began as a Head of English and senior leader in a large secondary school. Samantha holds a degree in English Literature from Cardiff University, a postgraduate teaching qualification from Nottingham University, and a Master’s in Education with distinction from the University of Birmingham.

Samantha specialises in leadership development, school improvement, and disadvantaged pupil outcomes. She leads the People Development Institute and contributes to several national steering groups, including with the EEF, supporting school improvement across sectors and phases.

Angela Crawley - Executive Principal (Primary)

In September 2023, Angela was appointed Primary Executive Principal, focusing on school improvement across the Trust. She has played a key role in driving curriculum and assessment developments throughout the primary phase and has taken on interim leadership roles to support schools during periods of transition. Her current focus is on strengthening provision across all primary-phase schools, with particular emphasis on ensuring effective transition into Key Stage 3.

Before joining the Trust, Angela held a range of leadership roles across different school settings. She has experience as a Deputy Headteacher, where she led on attainment, curriculum, behaviour, and personal development, and later moved into both acting and permanent headship roles.

Angela brings extensive experience in curriculum design, assessment, pedagogy, and strategic planning. She is particularly passionate about oracy—having trained as a National Leader—and the arts, which she studied formally. Her leadership is grounded in a commitment to educational equity and social justice, delivered through high-quality outcomes, innovative strategy, and inclusive, ambitious curricula.

She is also an active member of several primary education networks and regularly contributes to sector-wide innovation and improvement initiatives, helping to shape best practice across the wider educational landscape.

Matthew Purslow - Head of People Development Institute

Matthew has been part of Central Region Schools Trust since 2012, holding various leadership roles including Assistant Principal and Director of the RSA Teaching School Alliance. He now leads the Central People Development Institute, focusing on staff retention and professional growth across the Trust. His work supports cross-phase collaboration, school improvement, and high-quality professional development.

With a background in Modern Foreign Languages, Matthew has served as a teacher, Lead Practitioner, Head of Faculty, and Specialist Leader of Education. Since 2022, he has worked full-time at Trust level, championing inclusive, impactful CPD that supports both staff and student success.

He holds undergraduate degrees from the Universities of Plymouth and La Rochelle, France, and postgraduate qualifications from the Universities of Leicester and Bedfordshire. He has also completed leadership training with the National College.

Matthew specialises in coaching, mentoring, and developing early-career educators. He plays a key role in quality-assuring the Trust’s ECT, RQT, and CPD programmes, and facilitates the National Professional Qualification in Leading Teacher Development with Ambition Institute and Haybridge Teaching School Hub. His passion for professional learning drives his commitment to building expert, empowered teams across the Trust.

Claire Round - Director of SEND

Claire has over 30 years of experience in education, previously working in a Warwick school where she held multiple leadership roles, including Head of PE, Head of Year, and Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion. She has led initiatives in inclusive teaching, behaviour strategy, Pupil Premium, EAL provision, and SEND, earning her NASENCo Award in 2010 and establishing a Development Centre for students with complex needs.

As a Level 7 CPT3A Assessor since 2013, Claire has facilitated exam arrangements for inclusion, and further has also worked extensively in school trips and outdoor learning. She collaborated for over 20 years with Sport England, the Football Foundation, and local councils to develop grassroots women’s football, securing major funding for school sports facilities. Her contributions earned her the Coca-Cola Female Football Coach of the Year award in 2004. Now leading the CRST SEND Co-Design, Claire oversees a Central Inclusion Team and supports SENDCos and learning support teams across the Trust. She works closely with Worcestershire County Council to enhance SEND provision, promote adaptive teaching strategies, and develop alternative provisions for vulnerable students. She also delivers SEND CPD and training for staff at all career stages.

Scott Crane - Trust Lead Safeguarding

Prior to joining Central Region Schools Trust, Scott spent 19 years in secondary education, holding a range of leadership roles, including over four years as an Assistant Headteacher. He joined the Trust in 2016 as a Vice Principal on a secondment, which soon became a permanent position. Since then, he has led on key areas such as safeguarding, attendance, behaviour, curriculum, data, assessment, and timetabling. 

In April 2019, Scott began leading the Trust’s Safeguarding Strategic Group, initially alongside his Vice Principal responsibilities. His role has since evolved into Trust Lead for Safeguarding, where he provides strategic oversight and operational support across the Trust. A member of the National Association of Academy Safeguarding Advisors (NAASA), Scott plays a pivotal role in shaping and embedding safeguarding practices. 

His work includes supporting rapid school improvement, conducting due diligence for prospective Trust schools, implementing consistent safeguarding policies and processes, and developing robust quality assurance mechanisms. He also leads on the induction and ongoing support of Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs), writes and delivers training programmes, and ensures policy compliance across all settings. 

Scott’s leadership is defined by a commitment to safeguarding excellence and a collaborative approach that strengthens practice and culture across the Trust. 

Gemma Loveridge - Trust Lead VI Form

Gemma is a senior leader with over six years of strategic experience in education. Since joining Central Region Schools Trust in January 2023, she has served as Trust Vice Principal and Director of Sixth Form, leading the development of inclusive, high-quality post-16 provision. Her role spans KS5 compliance, funding, attainment, and student recruitment. 

She holds two undergraduate degrees in Performing Arts from the University of Worcester, a PGCE from the University of Warwick, and the NPQSL. She is currently completing the NPQH, further strengthening her leadership expertise. 

Beyond sixth form, Gemma leads the Trust’s student leadership programme, empowering pupils across all phases to contribute meaningfully to school life and their communities. Under her guidance, students have raised over £20,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital since 2024. 

Gemma also brings extensive experience in whole-school improvement, having led on curriculum design, personal development, CEIAG, attendance, and attainment at KS4 and KS5. Her leadership journey includes roles from Head of Year to Acting Head of School, consistently driving improvements in performance, behaviour, and culture. 

Her work is grounded in inclusive values and high expectations, with a strong belief in education’s power to transform lives and inspire young people to reach their full potential. 

Teresa Wilson - Trust Lead ITT & Early Career Stage

Teresa Wilson is the Trust Lead for ITT and Early Careers at Central Region Schools Trust. She previously led ITT delivery for seven years as part of the RSA Teaching School Alliance before taking on her current role in 2020. A highly experienced Computing teacher, Teresa has held various roles including Professional Mentor, Specialist Leader of Education (SLE), and lead for Teach Central, the Trust’s School Direct training route.

She contributes nationally as a Visiting Fellow for the Early Career Framework (ECF) and delivers the NPQLTD and NPQSL programmes in partnership with Ambition Institute and Haybridge Teaching School Hub. Teresa holds an undergraduate degree from Newman University and postgraduate qualifications from the University of Worcester and Birmingham City University.

Her expertise spans professional development, early career support, and instructional coaching, having trained through Ambition Institute. Teresa is deeply committed to supporting Early Career Teachers and Initial Teacher Trainees, specialising in induction, mentoring, and the development of both subject and professional mentors across the Trust.

She plays a key role in quality-assuring the implementation of ITT and ECT programmes, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. Through her leadership, Teresa continues to shape and support the next generation of educators across the Trust.

Hayley Farnell - Trust School Improvement Lead (English)

Hayley joined Central Region Schools Trust in January 2025 and brings over 20 years of teaching and leadership experience in English. She primarily supports KS4 English Language and Literature, delivering targeted intervention and working closely with students needing additional support. Hayley has led the rollout of KS3 assessments across Years 7–9, including the development of centralised mark schemes and moderation processes. She also works with KS2 colleagues to support transition, writing in Year 6, and NGRT reading initiatives.

A graduate of Bradford University with a postgraduate qualification in Education from Leeds, Hayley is also an Assistant Principal Examiner for AQA, enhancing her deep understanding of KS4 assessment. Throughout her career, she has held roles including KS4 Lead, Head of English, and Extended Leadership Team member. Passionate about mentoring, Hayley supports both early career and experienced teachers across the Trust to enhance teaching and learning in English.

Dean Salisbury - Trust School Improvement (Primary)

Dean has been a passionate and committed educator for over 18 years, with most of his teaching experience focused on Year 6. Throughout his career, he has consistently guided pupils toward strong academic outcomes, earning a reputation for high expectations, engaging teaching, and unwavering dedication to student success.

Since joining Central Region Schools Trust in 2019, Dean has contributed significantly to school improvement across the Trust. He has served as a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) and Trust Writing Lead, roles in which he has driven innovation in teaching and learning, particularly in writing. His leadership capabilities led to his appointment as Vice Principal at Sutton Park Primary School, where he played a key role in the school’s journey to achieving an Outstanding Ofsted judgement.

Dean holds both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Worcester, demonstrating his strong academic foundation and ongoing commitment to professional growth.

Carol Newman - Trust Lead EYFS & Phonics

Carol joined Central Region Schools Trust in 2022 as Director for Early Years, where she leads on ensuring high-quality provision and positive outcomes for young children across the Trust. A passionate advocate for outdoor learning and inspiring environments, she strives to help every child thrive.

Carol previously led Early Years at a Birmingham school, improving outcomes through a focus on early literacy and staff development. Her experience spans teaching 2–5-year-olds and supporting Looked After Children.

Internationally, Carol spent 12 years in Tanzania, where she strengthened community engagement, introduced SEN provision, and led phonics and recruitment initiatives in leadership roles across Mwanza and Zanzibar.

A specialist in early reading, she now leads phonics across CRST, supporting Read Write Inc. implementation and delivering training to educators at all levels. Carol is committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident reader. She is also a school governor and supports her daughter’s dance company on tour.

Michelle Martin - Trust Lead Creative Arts

Michelle joined Central Region Schools Trust in January 2025 as Trust Director of Art, bringing over 14 years of experience as a Trust Lead Professional for Art and Design. A passionate advocate for arts education, she leads the strategic development of the arts curriculum, expanding creative opportunities and fostering inclusive, inspiring environments for artistic expression.

A graduate of the University of Wolverhampton with a PGCE from Birmingham City University, Michelle’s career is marked by innovation, collaboration, and a deep belief in the transformative power of the arts. She previously served as Faculty Leader for the Arts for 12 years, leading initiatives that elevated the quality and visibility of arts education.

Michelle also contributes nationally as a Lead Moderator and Lead Assessment Writer for AQA and as a content writer for the Initial Teacher Education programme at the National Institute of Teaching. These roles reflect her influence in shaping art education beyond the Trust.

She leads curriculum co-design across the Trust, promoting collaborative development and continuous professional learning. Michelle’s leadership is grounded in the belief that high-quality arts education is vital to student development and that empowering educators is key to sustained excellence. She continues to champion creativity, ensuring both students and teachers thrive in the arts. 

Francesca Stanley - Trust Lead Personal Development

Francesca began her career in education working in alternative provisions across inner-city Birmingham, supporting young people at risk of gang involvement and child criminal exploitation. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Lincoln, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and a Master’s in Education from the University of Worcester.

Since joining Central Region Schools Trust at its inception in 2012, Francesca has held a variety of leadership roles, including leading the Key Stage 3 English curriculum, a range of pastoral responsibilities, and most recently, Personal Development at Arrow Vale High School. She now leads on Personal Development across the Trust and played a central role in co-designing the Trust’s secondary PSHE curriculum.

A WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) facilitator, Francesca also leads on the Prevent strategy at Arrow Vale and has contributed to the Worcestershire Channel Panel, supporting multi-agency efforts to safeguard young people from radicalisation.

Deeply committed to preparing students for life beyond the classroom, Francesca supports schools both within and beyond the Trust to deliver high-quality, inclusive PSHE, RSE, and pastoral programmes.

Dan Wright - Trust Lead Personal Development

Dan joined Holyhead School in 2011 as a Geography teacher and progressed through pastoral roles to become Vice Principal in 2021. Driven by a commitment to raising standards, he has delivered the NPQLBC across the West Midlands and supported staff development through coaching and mentoring, training as an instructional coach with the Ambition Institute.

Dan studied Outdoor and Environmental Education at Liverpool John Moores University and completed his teacher training through a graduate programme at Ninestiles School. His earlier work as an outdoor instructor sparked a passion for character education, recognising the life-changing impact of such experiences on young people.

He has since championed personal development, leading initiatives like the Duke of Edinburgh Award and even taking students on a six-week expedition to Bolivia. A qualified Mountain Leader, Dan was appointed Trust Director for Personal Development in 2022, alongside his Vice Principal role. He now leads efforts across the Trust to ensure students benefit from enriching experiences that broaden horizons and prepare them for successful, fulfilling lives. 

Niall Brennan - Trust Lead Attendance

Niall has been a committed member of Central Region Schools Trust since its formation and has worked at Arrow Vale since 2008. He has held a range of leadership roles, including Director of Learning and Standards for PE, Senior Head of Faculty, Assistant Principal, and Vice Principal. Originally trained as a PE teacher, Niall has also taught Business, ICT, Science, and Mathematics.

In 2024, he was appointed Trust Lead for Attendance, where he drives improvement across all Trust schools. He developed a unified Trust Attendance Tracker, enabling real-time, data-driven decisions, and works closely with the DfE, local authorities, and the Redditch Re-engage Attendance Steering Group.

Niall also leads Digital Learning across the Trust—a role that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has since led major digital initiatives, including new MIS systems, AI exploration, and broader digital transformation. Under his leadership, Arrow Vale has been recognised as a Microsoft Showcase School for two consecutive years.

He holds a degree in Sports Science and English, a PGCE, the NPQSL, and is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert. In 2025, he presented at the Worcestershire Attendance Conference, sharing best practice with over 150 schools. Niall is driven by a passion for continuous improvement in both people and systems. 

Eleanor Meredith - Trust Lead Enrichment

Eleanor joined Central Region Schools Trust in 2022 and has since played a key role in leading enrichment and student leadership across the Trust. She has delivered a wide range of initiatives, including the RSA8 and RSA4 social action projects, the Morgan Stanley Sustainable Business Project, the CRST Commonwealth Creative Festival, and is currently leading the CRST Performing Arts Showcase and CRST Big Sing.

Starting as an Assistant Principal, Eleanor is now a Vice Principal and part of the Trust's Personal Development team, helping realise the Enrichment Guarantee to ensure every student benefits from a rich, holistic education beyond the classroom.

With a background in Drama and Dance, Eleanor has held roles as Pastoral Leader, Head of Faculty, and Curriculum Director for Creative Arts. She holds a BA (Hons) from Manchester Metropolitan University, a PG qualification from the University of Central England, leadership training from Windsor Academy Trust, and is currently completing a Master’s in Philosophy in Dance.

Eleanor is passionate about equity, inclusion, and celebrating the unique identity of each school—believing deeply that, together, we are better. 

Jennifer Lewis - Trust Lead Science (Ogden Trust)

Jennifer began her teaching career through the Graduate Teacher Programme academy in London. After 14 years in South London, she relocated to Worcestershire and joined Church Hill Middle School as Science Lead, later becoming Assistant Headteacher with a focus on KS3 and science. In this role, she significantly improved STEM engagement and supported the development of the Trust’s co-designed KS3 science curriculum, promoting high-quality, inclusive teaching.

Now Trust Lead Practitioner for Science at Central Region Schools Trust, Jennifer drives excellence in science education across the Trust. She supports curriculum development, leads coaching and mentoring, and contributes to wider school improvement through strategic leadership.

Jennifer also leads a partnership with The Ogden Trust, expanding access to high-quality physics education and inspiring students from all backgrounds to engage with science beyond the classroom. Her work is grounded in a strong commitment to equity, empowerment, and professional growth. Through her leadership, she continues to reignite student curiosity and support teachers in delivering engaging, inclusive science education across all phases. 

Hattie Hayhurst - Trust Lead Science

Hattie has been a valued member of Central Region Schools Trust since 2019. In her role as Trust Lead Practitioner for Science, she has spearheaded the design and implementation of a new science curriculum, which she continues to review and refine to ensure it remains high-quality, inclusive, and impactful across all phases. Hattie also supports subject leaders across the Trust, playing an integral role in shaping science teaching and learning.

In addition to her Trust responsibilities, Hattie is a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) and has provided school-to-school support across a range of settings. Passionate about collaboration and professional growth, she has coached and mentored teachers at all stages of their careers—from Early Career Teachers and School Direct trainees to participants in the Teach First programme. 

Prior to taking on her current role, Hattie gained extensive experience as a science teacher, Key Stage Coordinator, and Lead Practitioner. These roles provided a strong foundation in curriculum development and teacher professional learning. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Sheffield and a PGCE from Sheffield Hallam University.

Hattie is particularly committed to improving outcomes in science by supporting teachers to deliver engaging, knowledge-rich, and inclusive lessons that ignite curiosity, build confidence, and foster a lifelong interest in the subject among young people.

Danielle Duignan - Trust Lead Reading

Danielle has been part of Central Region Schools Trust since January 2019 and currently serves as the Trust Reading Lead. She champions literacy across the Trust, fostering a rich, inclusive reading culture. At Sutton Park Primary School, she is also the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo), leads the Thrive approach, and supports the Trust’s reading strategy.

Her work is rooted in a holistic approach to education, ensuring every child receives tailored academic, social, emotional, and mental health support. Danielle holds a BA (Hons) in Education and has completed both the NPQSL and the NASENCO postgraduate award, equipping her with strong leadership and specialist skills.

As Trust Reading Lead, she collaborates with school leaders and staff to make reading accessible and engaging for all pupils. Her dual focus on literacy and SEND drives meaningful improvements in pupil outcomes and well-being. Danielle’s leadership reflects her deep belief in the transformative power of reading and inclusion.
